Have a Healthy Lifestyle Following The 80/20 Rule

The Pareto principle (known as the 80/20 rule) specifies that 80% of outcomes come from 20% of causes. This principle was named after Vilfredo Pareto, a famous economist, socialist and philosopher. 

The 80/20 rule can be applied to every part of your life. Whether it be health, work, exercise, finance, it all refers to the same concept. For example: 

  • When referring to business, you put your efforts into the 20% of customers who supply you with 80% of your sales. 
  • With exercising, try to have majority of the days be days when you are active (80%), and also give yourself rest days (20%).
  • In personal finance, 80% of your monthly income should be spent on expenses and spending, while 20% goes into your savings and investments. 

In regards to health, simply flip the 80/20 rule and focus on the 80%:

80% of the time, you implement healthy habits in your life. 20% of the time, you can relax a bit by doing or eating anything you’d like! 

In order to be truly healthy, it’s essential to look at your life from all angles. It’s not only food or exercise that makes your life “healthy”, combined as a whole it’s:

  • Nutrition
  • Environment
  • Career 
  • Relationships 
  • Spirituality 
  • Finances 
  • Physical activity 
  • Joy

For now, we are going to focus on health based on nutrition and reducing toxins. Think about it! If you overall eat healthy and reduce the majority of toxins in your life, you will feel and notice your health improve exponentially.

Applying the 80/20 rule to your life is 100% doable and truly takes any stress off of “always being healthy.” This is not a diet or cleanse; this is a lifestyle

It gives you that sense of permission and flexibility to enjoy indulgences and the things you enjoy, because it falls into the 20% which is MORE than okay! Yes, you can eat that piece of cake, have that restaurant burger, or enjoy cocktails with friends.

We’re human, we aren’t perfect. The way life goes or how things are is never going be perfect. You can be healthy and enjoy your life, without feeling guilt or like any of it is a chore! 

Applying the 80/20 rule to your life gives you freedom. It allows you to make smart, intentional choices majority of the time, without being too stressed about it.
